Why I Am An Atheist
I was raised as a Christian, by a Baptist mother and agnostic father. I attended Sunday School and Boys Brigade until I left primary school.
I cannot say what it was that changed me. Although Church bored me to tears I didn't hate the Church, or the thought of being a Christian.
Ask someone why they don't believe in Santa - most people were told as a child that it wasn't true, then it all makes sense. Sadly no one tells children that belief in God is only that - a belief. No evidence, just a whole lot of questions that generally end with, "only God knows", or "you'' have to wait for heaven to find out". These are not sufficient for an enquiring mind.
During my teenage years I didn't give religion any thought. In later years I have looked a little deeper into beliefs. I have always had a skeptical, logical mind and religion posed a big problem to my reasoning.
Was I wrong and everyone else right? Was I just rebelling against the Church I grew up with? The answer to both is a big fat NO! Everyone else could not possibly be right because there was so much disagreement between them that I find it hard to believe that there are two religious people on Earth that share the same view. How can there be Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindu's, to name but a few, that all have differing opinions as to the nature of God and what God wants from his people.
Quite frankly, after reading the ancient texts of these faiths, and observing the behaviour of God's followers, I wouldn't want to belong to their religion regardless. God and I would have to agree to disagree to me joining one of his clans.
